Onimusha: Way of the Sword developer Capcom has revealed the three aspects that form the core of the forthcoming action-adventure game, sharing fresh details about things such as combat and story characters. First announced in December 2024, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the first major release in the series since 2018’s Onimusha: Warlords remaster.
Established in 2001, Capcom’s Onimusha franchise spawned multiple fantasy-themed action games from the early to the mid-2000s. Despite most of those titles being critically well-received, the Japanese gaming giant slowed down production of the IP. However, Capcom gave a pleasant surprise to fans of the hack-and-slash series by announcing the first original Onimusha game in nearly two decades. With Onimusha: Way of the Sword slated to come out on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S in 2026, its developer recently hosted a stream to dish out more information about the forthcoming project.
During the Capcom Spotlight online event, the team behind Onimusha: Way of the Sword laid out the three «core aspects» of the title. Producer Akihito Kadowaki said that the devs have leveraged the franchise’s swordfighting action and dark fantasy themes, in addition to «Capcom’s latest technology,» to make the new entry «as captivating as possible.» To achieve this, he shared that the team focused its effort on the game’s «compelling» characters, its Kyoto setting, and its swordfighting combat. The Capcom lead stated that Way of the Sword would feature a new protagonist as well as a version of Kyoto «brimming» with historical locations, giving fans a hint of what to expect from the Onimusha game arriving next year.

Satoru Nihei, the director helming the latest rendition of the Onimusha series, shared that the game’s «beautifully eerie» depiction of Kyoto would feature real-life historical figures, with the devs’ «own touches,» and real-world locations such as Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Talking about Onimusha: Way of the Sword‘s combat, he revealed emphasizing on the «satisfaction of slicing» while working on the game’s swordfighting aspect. Highlighting the role of the Oni Gauntlet, he said that the player can use it to restore health and pull off special moves by absorbing the souls of enemies, an action that the Capcom veteran describes as being «key to victory.»
It is an exciting time for fans of Capcom’s samurai fantasy game, as the Resident Evil creator recently confirmed that another Onimusha project was in the making. In the immediate future, the developer is set to roll out another major game, Monster Hunter Wilds, on February 28, 2025, for current-gen consoles and PC.
